eMalahleni shows up in pink for breast cancer awareness
It was heartwarming to see 1 097 participants in this year’s Bettie Bandana Walk hosted at Highveld Mall.
More than 1 000 participants took part in the Bettie Bandana Walk on October 24 to mark the end of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
As walkers and runners completed the 5 km route, they shared a common purpose: “We are doing this for someone who survived cancer and those battling this disease.”
The incredible stories and emotions woven into this community project made it a walk to remember.

The story behind the initiative
Bettie Bandana started as an initiative after Retha van Greunen was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer on May 16, 2016, at the age of 40. Ten days later, she underwent a double mastectomy. Retha died on February 28, 2024.
Faced with many questions and uncertain of what to expect, she began sharing quotes with friends that pulled her through those agonising moments.

One of her best friends and former university roommate, Martie du Plooy, illustrated these words and created a fictional character – and Bettie Bandana was born.

“Thank you to everyone who came out to support this worthy cause,” said Nicola Blake, marketing manager at Highveld Mall.
