Family said they were told no help would come from fire department

A family was told that the fire department was on strike and would have to sort it out themselves.

A family recently feared the worst when a fire broke out at their residence situated at the Jackaroo small holdings.

Load-shedding causes water shortages leaving residents fearing the worst. The residents said they contacted Emalahleni Fire Department only to be told that the staff was on strike, no help could be given and the family would have to fight the fire on their own.

A fire that started at a neighbour spread rapidly to the next plot. Luckily the fire did not manage to reach the homes and died down after burning a large portion of land.

Municipal spokesperson Lebo Mofokeng said that reports of a strike are untrue and that the fire department does have some ongoing challenges but that a backup plan has been put in place to assist during fire outbreaks.

He also added that a few mines are standing by and ready in case of emergencies in accordance with the service level agreement between the mines and the municipality.
