Serial rape suspect appears in Witbank Magistrate’s Court facing rape charges and property damage allegations

His appearance before the court sheds light on the disturbing incidents that took place in early August.

A 22-year-old man, believed to be connected to a series of rape incidents, appeared before Witbank Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, August 10.

He faces a charge of rape as well as an additional accusation of malicious damage to property.

The accused’s encounter with the law dates back to Sunday, August 6, around 23:30, at Empumelelweni Extension 1

Allegations arose that he had raped a 35-year-old woman while she was asleep in her residence.

Reports indicate that the victim was awakened by unusual noises and discovered an unfamiliar man in her dining room.

Startled, she was allegedly forcibly taken to her bedroom, where the assault occurred.

The perpetrator fled the scene, leaving the victim to later uncover the entry point he had used – the kitchen door.

The incident was reported to the police, leading to an investigation that revealed the suspect’s return on Monday, August 7.

The victim positively identified him by his clothing, consistent with the apparel worn during the initial rape. Although he attempted to break into the victim’s residence once more, he was prevented from carrying out his intentions.

Further investigation into the suspect’s profile unveiled potential links to another case in the same area on August 7.

In this separate incident, a 54-year-old woman narrowly escaped a sexual assault after an unknown intruder entered her home through a broken window.

Disturbingly, the same suspect has a pending case from October 2022, involving housebreaking and attempted rape.

Despite being granted bail, his alleged criminal activities have persisted.

Police are actively exploring whether he could be connected to further heinous acts against women or other criminal offences.

Acting Station Commander of Vosman Police Station, Colonel Gayane Mashego, expressed satisfaction with the suspect’s apprehension.

He acknowledged the collective efforts of the law enforcement team and suggested that this arrest could potentially unravel other concealed cases involving the suspect or his associates.
