Tasbet Park residents hide as bullets fly

Four arrested after action-packed shootout

In a scene worthy of a big Hollywood action movie, a shootout between the police and an alleged cash-in-transit (CIT) heist gang took place in Tasbet Park 1.

Earlier today (April 3) the suspects allegedly attempted to push a CIT vehicle off of the road in what is believed to be an unsuccessful attempted heist in Klipfontein.

The CIT company tipped the police off about the vehicle that had attempted to bash them off of the road, and police were on the lookout for the suspects and vehicle.

Not long afterward gunshots rang through the air as bullets went flying around 10:30, when in a turn of fate, as the suspects were coming around a corner in the vehicle, they drove straight into the Tactical Response Team (TRT) squad.

According to police they were surrounded and they were commanded to surrender.

A shoot-out ensued.

Police arrest alleged suspects in Tasbet Park after shootout on Wednesday, April 3.

The TRT squad returned fire and quickly managed to gain control of the scene.

Five suspects were shot dead, three injured, and four attempted to escape by fleeing into the neighbourhood.

The four suspects who were trying to evade capture, were traced by a multi-disciplinary team on the ground and in the air and were arrested shortly after making their escape.

“More vehicles and illegal firearms were found and seized by the police. Not a single civilian was harmed, and nobody from the police or various teams involved was injured,” said police spokesperson Captain Eddie Hall.

The three injured suspects were taken to hospital and the investigation is ongoing.
