Thieves cost municipality thousands of rands

Naauwpoort Waste Water Treatment Plant on the outskirts of eMalahleni became a crime scene earlier this month.

Thieves have their sights set on waste water treatment plants, where they know electrical cables are up for grabs.

Between May 5 and May 6, thieves pounced on the Naauwpoort Waste Water Treatment Plant and stole 40m of electrical cable.

This amounts to a financial loss of R250 000.

That however does not compare to the environmental disaster that followed. As a result of the theft, sewerage streamed into the Olifants River.

Cable theft and vandalism are a major financial burden on the municipality’s already stretched budget and jeopardise the functionality of the essential infrastructure.

“We urge anyone with information about any damage to municipal infrastructure to contact us. You will be kept anonymous,” said the municipal spokesperson Mr Lebo Mofokeng on previous occasions.

You can phone the municipality on 013 690 6222.
