Dead dogs next to the road spark outrage in eMalahleni

More and more dead animals are dumped next to the road says SPCA.

Graphic photos of two dead dogs found on the Seekoeiwater road recently made waves on WhatsApp.

Brendan van der Merwe said he felt sick to his stomach when he drove past the two dogs wrapped in plastic on October 29.

“The dogs seemed well looked after. One dog’s paw was missing, and the other had bite marks. It makes one wonder if they were used for dog fighting,” Van der Merwe said.

Carika van Rooyen from the SPCA said it was a cruel and heartless way of disposing of a dead animal, “There are a lot of factors to consider before you dump a dead animal next to the road. Leaving a dead animal like that can lead to spreading disease and attracting pests. It also causes an unpleasant smell. It is downright sad.”

Van Rooyen said the SPCA disposes of dead animals for a donation, and pets that have passed away can also be disposed of at a vet.

The municipality has clear guidelines on how to dispose of a dead animal in their integrated waste management by-laws.
