Local furniture shop hit by brazen daylight robbery

Thieves in eMalahleni are on the run targeting local furniture shops and fleeing with valuable merchandise.

A local furniture shop became the latest victim of the growing crime wave in eMalahleni, as three armed suspects made off with valuable goods.

According to the police report, a complainant alleged that on Saturday, November 16, at approximately 11:30, three men entered the furniture shop, where they carried out a calculated armed robbery.

The complainant further added that one suspect, posing as a customer, allegedly lured a staff member to a secluded area.

He then revealed the group’s true intentions, warning the staff member not to scream.

The armed suspects allegedly demanded cash and cellphones.

Despite the store’s policy of not keeping cash on the premises, the suspects allegedly proceeded to restrain staff with cable ties, forcing them to lie down on the floor.

The suspects made off with TVs, laptops, and staff members’ cellphones.

Sergeant David Ratua spokesperson from the Witbank Police Station said:

“Ensure that your gates are locked and the keys cannot be easily reached or left lying around. Security gates with sturdy locks in front of each outer door and burglarproofing on all windows are recommended. An alarm system, preferably connected to an armed response company, can be an effective deterrent.

A few panic buttons in different rooms of the house should be installed. An alarm must also be capable of warning the occupants of any intrusion. Large dogs serve as a deterrent; at least one dog should be trained to sleep inside the house.”

This is still an ongoing case, as the Witbank police are investigating.
