Car theft and hijacking soar in eMalahleni

Make sure your vehicle is locked, because it is on a 'shopping list'.

A series of brazen car thefts and hijackings has struck the City of Coal. In three separate incidents, thieves stole a Toyota bakkie, a Nissan, and a trailer.

According to the police reports, a woman said she parked her grey Toyota Legend 50 bakkie at a local restaurant on November 29, at around 15:00.

While she was at the restaurant, she received a bank notification, at around 19:14 that cash had been withdrawn using her account. She realised she had left the bankcard in the bakkie and when she returned to where her vehicle was parked, it was gone.

The complainant further added that she then asked the security who was on duty, if the car was signed out, and the response was no.

In another incident, a man alleged that on Thursday, November 28, his white Nissan NP200, valued at thousands of rands, had been stolen inside his yard.

The man said that all was well the night before he slept, but when he woke up the following day, he found that the gate had been forced open and the vehicle was gone.

In a third incident a driver was hijacked on the Middelburg road on Wednesday, November 27.

He told police two men, allegedly armed with firearms, blocked his vehicle with two Toyota bakkies. The hijackers then allegedly unhooked the trailer and made off with it.

SAPS Witbank urges the community to be vigilant when travelling in their vehicles and to avoid hijacking hotspots as far as possible. Carjackers are becoming more violent and will use the necessary force to take your vehicle,” said police spokesperson, Captain Eddie Hall.
