Monkey killed because deep-seated belief in witchcraft
Chased up an electricity pylon the terrified animal was trapped and mercilessly beaten to death.
A heartbreaking tale of senseless violence unfolded in Hlalanikahle, KwaGuqa, leaving the community reeling in shock and disbelief.
Just weeks after WITBANK NEWS reported on and urged residents to leave a troupe of Vervet monkeys alone, one of these innocent creatures met a horrific end.
A witness, who wished to remain anonymous due to fear of intimidation, recounted the devastating events that occurred on January 23, that led to the monkey’s brutal demise.
Chased up an electricity pylon by a community member, the terrified animal was trapped and mercilessly beaten to death.
According to the witness, the motive behind this heinous act was a misguided and deep-seated belief in witchcraft. Locals allegedly mistakenly believe that monkeys are sent by witch doctors to spy on and steal from them.
This unfounded fear drove someone to risk life and limb to climb the pylon and take the life of a defenseless animal.
The senseless killing of this monkey serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for education and awareness about the importance of co-existing with wildlife.
“We ask that the public contact their nearest SPCA to remove any animals, including wild animals, and not take matters into their own hands. All animals also have the right to life. The matter will be investigated for the cruel way the animal was killed, and to get justice for the monkey,” commented Carika Roux from the Witbank SPCA.
