Electricity restored after cable fault yesterday

Businesses in Plumer Street are feeling the brunt of electricity problems in the area

Businesses along Plumer Street are grappling with electricity problems and, it is impacting their daily running costs.

Frequent electricity problems are a norm and running a generator costs business owners a penny and a pound.

“The electricity challenges facing businesses highlight the urgent need for a more reliable and sustainable power supply in the area,” said Mr Fredi Magani, owner of Pick n Pay Family in Plumer Street.

The area had no power since yesterday after a cable fault.

Electricity was restored a few minutes ago.

Plumer Street falls under Ext 5 and according to the municipality the repairs yesterday were interrupted due to intermittent weather conditions.

This electricity outage came right after the Dan Pienaar substation was vandalised earlier this month.

Businesses including Pick n Pay Family, a laundromat, a pharmacy, and others suffered damages after an electricity surge.

“Our light bulbs popped one after the other and our computer was damaged,” said one of the workers at the pharmacy.

Ward councillor Ward 21. Antonie Brits said he visited the substation and was shocked to see that it was locked with only one lock.

“With a hike in criminal activities, every substation should have better security. Municipal infrastructure is a soft target for criminals,” Brits said.
