Emalahleni Local Municipality boosts local economy with business equipment handover

The municipality is investing in local business.

The Emalahleni Local Municipality has taken a significant step in supporting small businesses, handing over essential equipment to 18 Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs). This initiative forms part of the municipality’s Local Economic Development (LED) Strategy.

Executive Mayor, Clr Vusi Nhlapho, emphasised the importance of efficiency in municipal processes, saying,“We must ensure that we do not delay programmes like this. My mandate is to fix this institution and serve the people effectively.”

The equipment handed over on March 5 includes sound and DJ equipment, mobile kitchens, internet café equipment, and gym equipment, among others. The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) and the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA) played a crucial role in assisting with the process.

“This initiative is only the beginning, and all allocations were made in line with the municipal budget,” said Thabani Buthelezi, Director of Development Planning.

Nhlapho reaffirmed the municipality’s commitment to supporting SMMEs, recognising them as the largest employers within the city.

“Whatever product you are receiving today, may it sustain your business and contribute to your growth,” he said.

One of the beneficiaries, Melusi Thabethe, expressed his heartfelt gratitude, saying,“Receiving this lighting plant is a significant milestone for my business, and I’m grateful for the support from Emalahleni Local Municipality. This equipment will undoubtedly help a lot in my business, enabling me to operate more efficiently and effectively, and I’m confident that it will have a positive impact on my overall operations.”

The municipality will conduct follow-up visits to ensure that all beneficiaries are utilising the equipment effectively and progressing in their businesses.

A total of 32 businesses qualified for assistance, with the remaining 14 set to receive their equipment soon.
