Eskom employees in court for pump with hefty price tag

Eskom incurred a loss of R850 000 after the invoice for the fraudulant pump was processed and paid.

Six Eskom employees, Mokete Mokhuthu, Thabiso Tsatsi, Candy Vincent Moloto, Cornelius Makgwale, Lindiwe Khumalo, and Poppy Martha Moloto, appeared in Witbank Magistrate’s Court on charges of fraud and money laundering related to a pump procurement scam at Kusile Power Station.

According to Monica Nyusa, regional NPA Spokesperson, the arrests took place following allegations of fraudulent activities at Eskom’s Kusile Power Station.

The scam involved a manipulated bidding process in October 2018, where a pump valued at R37 000 was fraudulently procured for R850 000.

Investigations revealed that the same pump, bearing the identical serial number, had already been purchased in 2015.

“The fraudulent transaction resulted in Eskom incurring a loss of R850 000 after the invoice was processed and paid,” said Nyusa.

The accused were granted bail of R60 000 each, with strict conditions, including not leaving the country without notifying the investigating officer, reporting to the police station every Friday, and surrendering their travel documents to the investigating officer.

The case has been postponed to June 20 for further investigation.
