Heide Street residents cry for help over potholes and waterlogged road
Potholes and water seepage in Heide Street pose a threat in the livelihoods of the community.
Residents in Heide Street and surrounding areas are fed up with the poor road conditions and water damage that continue to make their lives miserable.
With many parts of the City of Coal experiencing similar issues, Heide Street residents believe their street has become a hazard to drivers and pedestrians as it is lined with potholes and uneven surfaces, and instead of improving, the situation is deteriorating with time.
Nordika Duvenhage, a street resident, said the road conditions are unacceptable and have caused significant damage to vehicles passing by. “Cars are getting stuck in the mud-filled potholes, and it’s impossible to access our driveways,” she said.
The situation is worsened by water seepage at the corner of Sky – and Heide Street, which causes the water to run through to the entire street. Residents who have lived in the street for decades claim it is their first time experiencing such a situation.

The concerned community alleged that despite their numerous attempts to bring the issue to the attention of the municipality, their situation remains the same.
“It’s frustrating because we know that eMalahleni is struggling with water problems,” Nordika said, adding that if the cause of the water seepage is due to a pipe leak, fixing it there and then would be a good starting point to address the water problems in the town.
Madelene Kotze, another resident affected by the issue in Heide Street, and at her house on Panorama Street, where the water runs through, said, “I slipped and fell while jogging in the morning. It’s confusing because it looks like a water table that is overflowing after heavy rains.”
