From pain to purpose – Thandeka drives a movement to empower women

Divorce and job loss did not stop Thandeka – instead she started a safen haven for women in Vosman.

Thandeka Jiyane (36) from Vosman has turned her personal struggles into a powerful movement that uplifts women in her community.

After facing challenges such as divorce and unemployment, Jiyane founded Umqhele Wamakhosiakazi in 2024 to provide a safe space for women to share their experiences and find support.

“My journey has not been easy, but I’ve learnt to turn my pain into purpose,” Jiyane said. “I was divorced twice and struggled with unemployment, but I didn’t let that define me. Instead, I used those experiences to create a movement that empowers women and helps those in need.”

At the heart of the movement work is a commitment to providing essential support to disadvantaged families. Every month, Umqhele Wamakhosiakazi distributes groceries to families who struggle to make ends meet.

“We’re committed to helping families in need,” Jiyane said. “Every donation, no matter how small, can make a big difference in someone’s life.”

The movement is dedicated to empowering women and girls, providing a safe space for them to share their experiences and find support.

“We want to create a community where women can feel supported and empowered,” Jiyane explained. “We believe that every woman deserves to live a life free from poverty, abuse, and exploitation.”

Umqhele Wamakhosiakazi is now gearing up for a new project by collecting sanitary pads for girls in need.

“We want to ensure that every girl has access to the sanitary products she needs to thrive, Thandeka said. “We’re calling on the community to support us in this effort.”

The foundation’s commitment to empowering women and supporting families in need has already made a tangible impact in the community.

“We’ve seen firsthand the difference that our work can make,” Thandeka said. “We’re proud of what we’ve achieved so far, and we’re excited to see the impact we’ll make in the future.”

As the movement continues to grow and expand its reach, Thandeka is calling on the community to join hands in supporting their efforts.

“We can’t do this alone,” she said. “We need the support of individuals, organisations, and businesses to make a real difference in the lives of women and families in need.”
