Two people fixing the road on OR Tambo injured when car crashes into them

Motorists should always stay within the speed limit, as there are road workers, children, cyclists, and many pedestrians on the road.

Motorists are warned to always be observant when driving at night to avoid running over people who may be on the roads for varying reasons.

This comes after an incident that occurred on May 6 around 17:20 when the workers were busy working to finish up repairing the potholes they had already prepared for the day, and were suddenly hit by a car.

According to Clr Maureen Scheepers, about an hour after the incident, she arrived at the scene and was surprised to find the rest of the team who were not involved in the incident continuing to work, even though it was getting dark.

Scheepers said she advised them to stop working due to safety concerns, specifically the lack of streetlights and insufficient warning lights for motorists to see that they’re working on the road.
However, she said the workers explained that they had already cut and prepared the portions for repair and were trying to complete the work to avoid accidents that could be caused by the deep holes. The man and woman who were hit by the car were rushed to the hospital, where they would receive medical attention.

The spokesperson for the Witbank Police Station, Captain Eddie Hall, said motorists are advised to stay within the speed limit as there are road workers, children, cyclists, and a lot of pedestrians on the road.

“They must also look out for workers who are working on the roads because their lives also matter,” he said.
