Municipality empowers informal traders with essential equipment
“We are not just handing out equipment – we are restoring dignity, creating opportunity, and investing in the resilience of our communities,” says Clr Nombuso Mokwana.
Emalahleni Local Municipality has taken a significant step in supporting small-scale enterprises by handing over gazebos and essential equipment to informal traders operating in the Central Business District and Phola.
The handover was led by the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Development and Planning, Clr Nombuso Mokwana.
“We recognise the vital contributions made by informal traders in our city,” said Mokwana. “This is one of many steps toward creating structured support and formalisation opportunities for these hard-working individuals.”

The equipment handed over on May 27 and May 28 included gazebos, chairs, foldable tables, and mobile kitchen units for selected beneficiaries in the food sector.
Mokwana emphasised the importance of empowering informal traders as a key part of local economic transformation.
“We are not just handing out equipment – we are restoring dignity, creating opportunity, and investing in the resilience of our communities,” she said.
