Man in court for allegedly setting two women on fire in Kwa-Guga

Both victims remain in critical condition in hospital.

A man who allegedly burned two women inside a house in Kwa-Guqa Extensions, make his first appearance at Witbank Magistrate’s Court today.

He was arrested last week after allegedly setting his girlfriend, Nompumelelo Gumede, and his own sister on fire during a domestic dispute on July 23.

According to Vinolia Mashiane from Kwanele Mama Foundation, the suspect allegedly poured petrol in the room where the duo was, set it alight and left them locked in to burn. She further mentioned that he went and allegedly sat in a different room.

“They burned until the neighbours came, and that was when he also attempted to help in rescuing them,” Mashiane said.

The ladies were thereafter rushed to the clinic, where they reportedly explained what happened, revealing the person responsible, before passing out.

They were transported to the hospital and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit where they continue to fight for their lives.
