No fire permits issued in eMalahleni as veld fire season heats up
Veld fire season is a major concern in eMalahleni, with strong August winds increasing the risk. No fire permits will be issued.
Veld fires are a huge cause of concern, especially with the August winds blowing in eMalahleni.
“The dry conditions and strong winds that characterise this season can turn a small spark into a raging inferno, threatening lives, property, and the environment,” said Piet Wassenaar from the local fire association.
He added that no fire permits are now issued.
Being prepared is crucial.
Wassenaar added that homeowners should clear away dry leaves, branches, and other combustible materials from around homes and buildings.
“Be vigilant and cautious. Open fires, including braais, should never be left unattended.”
“All fires must be properly extinguished with water or sand, ensuring no embers remain. It is also important to stay informed about weather forecasts, as high winds and dry conditions can increase the risk of a fire spreading out of control,” Wassenaar said.
