The Emalahleni Local Municipality (ELM) urges road users to be patient and drive with caution as their team continues to do the pothole repairs that will improve the condition of the road.

This comes after a resident voiced out concerns about the prepped potholes that are often left open, citing safety concerns for motorists driving through the night, or sometimes even at daylight.

“The workers prepare the potholes and leave them open. Some of the preparation involves them digging deeper, then they just leave it like that,” the resident said, adding that the holes could lead to serious danger for motorists who could accidentally drive over them.“It can damage the wheel or might cause an accident because drivers swerve violently to avoid the prepped potholes,” the resident added.

However, the spokesperson for the ELM, Lebo Mofokeng, explained that digging and preparation are also part of the process of fixing the road.

“They dig and put in the necessary oils which have to dry up, so, for that reason, they can’t just dig and fill up at the same time,” Mofokeng said, further explaining that though the process may take days, it can never be beyond a week.
“Road users must be patient with the team as they are working tirelessly to fix the road, and they don’t want to do shoddy work. We are approaching a rainy season, and we will need to have proper roads,” he added.
