2 accidents on OR Tambo get Monday off to a shaky start

Two accidents on OR Tambo, 15 minutes apart, disrupt traffic in eMalahleni just before peak hour rush.

A surge of chaos hit OR Tambo Road earlier today as two accidents unfolded within 15 minutes of each other.

Miraculously, no one was seriously hurt.

In the first accident, two cars collided at the traffic light on the corner of OR Tambo Road and Amsterdam Street.

The traffic light has not been working the whole day.

The children and their mothers in the one car, as well as the driver of the Hyundai, are fine.

Just a few minutes later, a second accident happened just a few meters further.

First-aider André de Klerk said he was walking along OR Tambo when he heard a loud noise.

When he turned around, he saw a car in front of a truck.

“I just ran and assisted. Luckily, no one was seriously injured. I bandaged a young boy’s foot as he stepped on a piece of glass,” André said.

Brendan van der Merwe said they were on their way to Duck Pond with their children for a family outing when the driver of the truck allegedly turned left into their lane.

“I just felt the bump and then the truck pushed us several meters. I wrestled the steering wheel in an effort to keep the car from tilting over,” Brendan said.

His wife, Carol, said the car has so much sentimental value as she has had it since she was 21.

“I am just so incredibly grateful that no one was injured – that’s what truly matters – but my heart is absolutely broken over my car.”
