Dedicated neighbourhood watch keeps eMalahleni safe
The organisation has been partnering with other local entities to tackle crime and bring help to residents all over the city.
Highveld Park Neighbourhood Watch, under the South African Community Crime Watch (SACCW) continues to work tirelessly to serve the community of eMalahleni, bringing them help and ensuring their safety at all times.
Since its launch in 2017, the organisation has been looking out for the community of eMalahleni, responding to scenes and getting them assistance from different departments, based on the nature of the problem.
“We started this to be the eyes and ears for authorities in our city, because sometimes information takes time to get to them, and that is where we step in,” said Frik van Dyk, Highveld Park Neighbourhood Watch chairperson and response captain.
The organisation also partners with other entities in eMalahleni, such as the Polsec Group, mostly running in the location where there are hijackings, stabbings, robberies, and ATM bombings.
“If there’s an incident like a vehicle hijacking, we respond with the tracking team and try to recover the car,” Frik said, adding that they are also active on highway spikings. “When incidents occur, we go there and assist, and we stay there until victims are safe,” he said.
So far, they have 46 responders and a SACCW Zello channel that consists of community members, towing companies, ambulance services, traffic officers, police officers, and various security companies.
Whenever something happens, people use the channel to report, as it works as a two-way radio and is always active 24/7.
“Community members who also have a passion for the community are always welcome to join us, but we mostly encourage the community of eMalahleni to download the app so they can report and get help in cases of emergency,” the chairperson said.
For more information about the channel and how to join the organisation, you can contact Frik at 079 142 7834.
