Traffic officer killed on duty laid to rest, Mozambican driver still at large
Police continue in their tireless efforts to hunt the driver down.
The late Principal Provincial Inspector, Joseph Mtselu, was laid to rest this past weekend after he was hit and killed on duty by a vehicle on the N4 toll road near Middelburg.
On October 18, officials and communities came together to bury the traffic officer following the disturbing news about his passing that broke on October 14.
According to Moeti Mmusi from the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mtselu’s life was cut short when he directed a bakkie pulling a trailer to the Middelburg Weighbridge on the N4 toll road, and it allegedly did not stop, hitting him. The 49-year-old was declared dead on the scene.
Though the driver fled soon after the incident, the police managed to seize his vehicle, which had passengers, and during investigations, it was discovered that the driver was Mozambican, as they also found his passport inside the bakkie.
“The passengers have been cooperating with the police, assisting them with as much information as they can to ensure that they find the driver who is still at large,” Mmusi said.
