Security guards left shaken after armed robbery at eMalahleni school
The police advise security guards to always be alert and avoid distractions.
Two workers safeguarding a local school fell prey to an armed robbery that left them dizzy and without phones.
According to the police, one of the guards said that on October 24, around 02:00, he was busy patrolling at a local school where he works when his colleague suddenly shouted, informing him about a group of 10 allegedly armed men coming from the back of the school.
As the gang ran toward them, he reported that they managed to run to the guard room, where they locked themselves in.
After refusing to open the door, even after death threats uttered at them, the gang broke the toilet window and sprayed pepper spray through the window, which caused the workers to suffocate, allowing them a chance to make their way in.
They assaulted and pointed a firearm at the two workers, robbing them of their phones and a wallet.
The police attended the scene, and investigations into the case are underway.
Spokesperson for the Witbank SAPS, Captain Eddie Hall, advises that to prevent armed robbery, security guards should stay alert by being aware of their surroundings, avoiding distractions, and noticing suspicious activity.
“Also, businesses and schools should have proactive physical security measures like good lighting, secure entrances, and visible security devices as these can act as deterrents,” Hall said, adding that during a robbery, security guards should remain calm, comply with demands, and try to get a good description without escalating the situation.
