Heavy rainfall leaves over 30 buses stranded at Puma Stadium

What was meant to be a peaceful gathering quickly turned into a logistical challenge when persistent downpours soaked the grounds, leaving the buses stuck in deep mud overnight.

More than 30 buses were left stranded at Puma Stadium after heavy rainfall on Sunday turned the parking area into thick mud, blocking the vehicles from moving.

The buses had been transporting congregants attending a large three-day church conference at the stadium.

“We travelled from different provinces and arrived here on Friday, November 14,” said a congregant from Rustenburg in the North West.

“We were not expecting to be trapped here for this long, but now it seems like we won’t be going home anytime soon, as our bus company has not found a towing company for us,” he added.

The buses were set to leave eMalahleni in the afternoon of Sunday, November 16.

On November 17, frustration grew among bus operators and passengers as the vehicles remained immobile. Tow trucks were eventually brought in to assist, but only bus companies that had paid for towing services were able to move their vehicles. Others were forced to wait longer.

Several church members expressed concern about the lack of preparation for such weather conditions.

“Our main concern is the learners and students who got stuck with us here, as they were supposed to be writing their exams today. It’s really bad, I don’t even know how they will work out,” said a passenger.
