Kromdraai flooding crisis deepens as rain pours

The Emalahleni Local Municipality mayor has recently visited the area to address the issue.

For Kromdraai residents, the rain isn’t merry at all — it’s pure havoc.

Early last month, heavy downpours caused severe flooding that damaged their streets, affected homes, and disrupted daily life. Residents have been dealing with the aftermath ever since, and many are still waiting for a lasting solution.

After the recent flooding that impacted parts of Kromdraai and Empumelelweni in Ward 29, residents voiced out their frustrations, stating that they have been waiting for the municipality to take action for ages, and they haven’t noted any progress.

The Emalahleni Local Municipality’s Executive Mayor, Clr Vusi Nhlapho, then visited the area to address the issue and update the residents on the possible immediate way forward.

According to the residents in the area, the community, which has been grappling with severe flooding, was assured that a temporary bridge would be constructed to ease their daily struggles.

“The mayor, Clr Vusi Nhlapho, came on November 11, and they promised to do a temporary bridge for now because they don’t have to do a permanent one,” said Oupa Skosana, a resident.

According to the residents, during his visit, the mayor acknowledged the hardships faced by residents, many of whom have been cut off from essential services and schools due to damaged roads and unsafe crossings.

“It’s been weeks now, and there’s no progress. The situation remains very bad for both pedestrians and motorists,” Skosana said.

“They promised that from about three weeks back they would be working on it, but the situation is very bad now as it is still raining,” he added.

Attempts to contact the Emalahleni Local Municipality’s spokesperson, Lebo Mofokeng, to comment on the mayor’s visit and the project progress were made. However, Mofokeng is yet to comment.

The community is still calling on the municipality to honor its pledge and deliver urgent intervention.
