eMalahleni carjackings: Beyond theft – lives are at risk

Carjackings in eMalahleni are far more than theft; recent cases show how residents’ lives are at risk.

Carjackings in eMalahleni are not just about stolen vehicles; they are violent crimes that can escalate to serious injury or death. According to the latest stats, the city tops the province in hijacking cases.

Recent incidents highlight the deadly reality:

  • Lucky James Nyaka, 51, a golfing champion, was hijacked on May 14 and later found dead in Nigel.
  • In June, multiple vehicles, including a Toyota D56, Ford Ranger, and Toyota Hilux, were hijacked across KwaGuqa Extensions, Empumelelweni, Clewer, and other areas. Victims were assaulted, shot, or left unconscious.
  • On June 11, a hijacking in KwaGuqa Extension 7 escalated into murder; one occupant was shot in the chest, while another was kidnapped.
  • In October, deliveryman Ernesto Daniel Luzolo (43) was killed during a hijacking in the CBD, and Nsuku Nkuwa (18) was shot and assaulted in Tasbet Park 1, with a local shopkeeper also killed.

SAPS offers the following tips to help residents stay safe, particularly during the festive season: “Keep doors locked and windows closed while driving, especially at night or in isolated areas. Stay aware of your surroundings; avoid distractions such as mobile phones when stopping at intersections or in quiet streets. Do not resist armed hijackers; personal safety is more important than possessions. Report suspicious activity immediately to your nearest police station or emergency number. Avoid displaying valuables such as cash, phones, or GPS devices in plain view. Use well-lit, populated areas for parking, and avoid shortcuts through isolated streets or informal settlements.”
