Motorists warned: No mercy for drunk driving as New Year traffic peaks

As New Year traffic peaks, Mpumalanga MEC Jackie Macie has warned motorists that law enforcement will act without leniency.

With New Year celebrations in full swing and traffic volumes set to peak, Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, has issued a stern warning to motorists: obey the rules or face the full might of the law.

Macie said reckless behaviour on the roads will not be tolerated, stressing that road safety remains a shared responsibility. He confirmed that law enforcement officers are enforcing traffic laws aggressively across the province.

“Law enforcers must not be lenient on any breach of the law or on drivers operating unsafe vehicles. Drunk drivers and speedsters must be arrested immediately,” he said.
“All drivers must play their part in making the roads safer for everyone.”

Traffic is expected to surge on Sunday as holidaymakers return home or prepare to resume work.

Law-enforcement officers will be deployed in full force on major routes and hotspots.

The MEC urged motorists who are travelling as from January, 2 to do so to avoid congestion and reduce the risk of crashes.

Commending officers for their festive-season operations, Macie revealed that more than 137 000 vehicles have already been stopped province-wide.

Over 41 000 vehicles were inspected at weighbridges to ensure load compliance, particularly among freight trucks.

About 700 unroadworthy vehicles were impounded, while more than 22 000 fines were issued, mostly for moving-traffic violations.

The MEC called on motorists to drive sober, buckle up, obey speed limits and respect other road users.
