Witbank SPCA raises alarm over animal suffering after fireworks

Witbank SPCA has raised concern over the harm caused to animals following New Year’s fireworks.

The Witbank SPCA has raised serious concern over the impact of New Year’s fireworks on animals, following reports of widespread distress, injuries, and animals fleeing in panic.

“We saw so many animals get lost, hurt, and run away because of the fireworks,” said Carika van Rooyen, chairperson of Witbank SPCA . “While most people are celebrating the new year, we have to be the voice for the voiceless, comforting animals that are confused, terrified, and in many cases far from home.”

She explained that loud noises and bright flashes cause extreme stress and panic in animals.

“Many animals try to escape, injure themselves, or go missing as a result,” she said.

She added that the impact was not limited to household pets. “We received reports of dogs and cats going missing, as well as horses and a donkey. In one case, a bull was seriously injured and suffered a broken leg while trying to get away from the noise.”

According to Carika , older animals, rescue animals, shelter animals, and feral cats are especially vulnerable during fireworks.

Pet owners who have lost animals are urged to contact Witbank SPCA immediately at 013 650 2321.
