2 boys drown in Masakhane

The boys went swimming in a dam in Masakhane and never resurfaced.

The Acting Station Commander of Witbank SAPS, Colonel Nonhlanhla Kgosana, has issued a stern warning to the public following the drowning of two young boys in a small dam in Masakhane.

According to police, the tragedy occurred on January 7 when community members alerted police that the boys had gone swimming in the small mine dam and had not resurfaced.

Police divers were immediately dispatched to search, and after several hours, the boys’ bodies were recovered. They were sadly declared deceased at the scene.

Kgosana expressed her deepest condolences to the families of the deceased children and urged the community to exercise extreme caution during the rainy season.

“We appeal to parents and guardians to closely monitor their children and to ensure that they do not swim in rivers, dams, or any open water sources. These areas are extremely dangerous, especially after heavy rainfall,” she said.

SAPS also calls on community members to work together in preventing such tragedies by discouraging children from playing or swimming near open water and by reporting unsafe situations to the police.
