eMalahleni woman allegedly kidnapped and robbed of more than R50 000
Police reports indicate that the victim was transported to an unknown location, where she discovered several other individuals being held against their will.
Witbank SAPS is investigating a case of armed robbery and kidnapping after a woman was kidnapped at gunpoint in the CBD.
The incident occurred on January 16.
The woman claimed she was walking on Diederichs Street around 17:30 when a white vehicle blocked her way, and a passenger got out of the car and approached her. He allegedly forced her inside the car and said he would shoot if she didn’t obey.
She further told the police that they drove with her; however, along the way, they took her phone and allegedly made transactions using her banking accounts.
It appears that a loan of more than R50 000 was made using the woman’s phone, and immediate payments were then made to different accounts.
Explaining to the police, the woman said that she was taken to an unknown address, inside a room where she found other people who were also kept to be robbed of their money from their banks.
The woman was dropped off at Zibulo Road, also known as Lesley Road, toward the Ogies and Bethal Road at 02:00, where she managed to get help.
No arrests have been made yet, and the suspects in the case are still at large.
The Witbank SAPS spokesperson, Captain Eddie Hall, has urged residents to normalise walking in pairs, sharing live locations with people they trust, add them on speed dial, and always update them on your whereabouts.
“To reduce your risk of becoming a target, you should vary your daily travel routes to work, school, or errands so your movements are not predictable for anyone watching you,” said Hall.
“Always remain vigilant of your surroundings, especially when entering or exiting your property or stopping at intersections,” he added.
