New year, same criminal culture; two hijacked four days apart

Police are still calling for motorists’ vigilance as hijackers in eMalahleni are not picky; any car might be targeted.

Two vehicles were hijacked at gunpoint in the Vosman policing area four days apart.

The first incident was reported on January 13, and the second incident was reported on January 17.

Both cases are under investigation, with police working to establish possible patterns.

In the first incident that occurred in Kwa-Guqa Extensions on January 13, around 19:37, a man told the police that he had just parked his car inside his yard when he noticed two armed men with balaclavas walking inside his yard.

He further told the police that the hijackers instructed him not to make noise, pushed him inside the passenger seat, drove away with him, and dragged him out of the car by a local power station.

The hijackers made off with his Toyota Hilux bakkie, his cellphone, cash, and other essential items.

In the second incident that occurred on January 17 around 2:30, a woman told them that she was driving from a local chilling area in Ackerville when five armed men targeted her at a stop sign.

Explaining to the police, the woman told the police that the gang instructed her to get out of the car and run away. The hijackers got away with her car, a Hyundai I20.
