Business in eMalahleni begins with a clean sidewalk

CBD in action as law enforcement tightens the net on crime and non-compliance.

Many shopowners were seen with brooms in their hands, cleaning up in front of their shops in the CBD.
This was a result of a massive multi-agency operation that swept through the CBD on February 3.

Joined by MMC for Community Services, Clr Sizwe Buthelezi, and the Mayor, Clr Vusi Nhlapho, they targeted criminal hotspots and non-compliant businesses that have long hindered the city’s economic growth.

Backed by SAPS, municipal law enforcement, and community safety departments, the operation targeted illegal occupation, criminal activity, and non-compliant businesses threatening public safety and the city’s economic heartbeat.

Unhygienic living conditions inside a business premises, a direct violation of municipal health bylaws and the Mpumalanga Business Act, were uncovered.
The operation proceeded to Emala Mall and its surrounding streets, where traders were engaged in ensuring permit compliance and maintaining cleanliness.
Hawkers were urged to play their part in keeping trading areas clean, with immediate clean-up actions enforced on the spot.

“We are taking significant steps toward reclaiming the communities from illegal activities that threaten public safety and the integrity of our neighbourhoods,” Nhlapo said.

The municipality confirmed that these hard-hitting operations will continue to ensure the CBD remains safe, lawful, and open for business.
