Pedestrian killed, six injured in two separate accidents

With the Easter weekend approaching, TRAC warns motorists to exercise extra caution on the roads.

Emergency personnel faced a challenging weekend following a series of road accidents, including a fatal collision on Friday and a multi-vehicle crash yesterday afternoon.

Yesterday, six people were injured in a collision on the R555 involving a Datsun Go and a taxi.

According to a relative of the Datsun driver, the motorist — who was visiting from Gauteng — was unfamiliar with the road and unaware of the speed humps.

The driver drove into the back of the taxi at the speed hump.

The relative expressed frustration regarding the placement of the speed humps.

“The speed humps are causing more harm. I think they should be erected at the stop street a few meters away, where drivers don’t stop. In the middle of the stretch of road, these speed humps are a death trap.”

Ward Councillor Maureen Scheepers, who arrived at the scene, voiced sharp criticism regarding the lack of cooperation from the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral).

Scheepers noted that Sanral previously failed to attend a scheduled meeting to address concerns about the road.

“I have not had any feedback from Sanral to discuss how this matter will be resolved,” she stated, adding that the current situation is “unacceptable.”

At the time of reporting, the medical condition of the six individuals, two from the Datsun Go and four passengers in the taxi who were transported to the hospital, remains unknown.
