Bakkie believed to be the municipality’s hijacked at gunpoint

Police are urging motorists to exercise vigilance when driving in and out of the City of Coal, as hijackers remain on the lookout for easy targets.

Vosman SAPS is investigating another case of carjacking after a bakkie that is believed to belong to the municipality was recently hijacked at gunpoint.

The incident occurred on April 19.

According to the police, the man said that he had visited a friend, driving a bakkie with the municipality’s stickers, when he was overpowered.

The man reported that as his friend was coming to the driver’s side, he suddenly saw another man who reportedly pointed a firearm at him and ordered him to get out of the car.

The man’s friend was also ordered to lie down.

The man further told the police that the man asked him for the car keys, and he told the man he didn’t have it. The car keys were in the car’s ignition. The man told the police that he fled the scene with the bakkie, and it remains at large.

The list of stolen municipal fleet is growing as the bakkie was hijacked shortly after the municipality’s garbage truck was reported hijacked at gunpoint. Just weeks before the truck was hijacked, a grader was also reported stolen and the pair was followed by another bakkie that belonged to the municipality too. The grader, garbage truck, and the two bakkies remain at large as of the latest update.

The registration number of the garbage truck is JMJ 513 MP.
