Help baby Darius win his fight for life

The little fighter has been fighting since birth, and he needs the community to set up in his corner and help with his family’s financial burden.

The Saayman family is reaching out to the public for help as they face an overwhelming medical and financial battle to save their newborn son, Darius Hendrik Saayman.

Born prematurely at just 31 weeks on February 25, baby Darius was rushed to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where he fought for survival.

His journey has been made even more difficult by a diagnosis of Hereditary Spherocytosis, a hereditary blood disorder that affects red blood cells and can cause complications such as anaemia and jaundice.

While doctors and nurses are providing exceptional care, the family has been left with devastating medical bills. Their medical aid coverage was scheduled to begin on March 1, but because Darius was born on February 25, the policy was not yet active.

This has left the family responsible for the full cost of his NICU stay and hospital treatment. In addition, the mother’s own hospital benefits have already been exhausted, leaving further outstanding bills.

To ease this burden, the family has launched a BackaBuddy campaign to raise funds for baby Darius’s care. They are also running a raffle, with tickets available for R100 each. Ticket holders stand a chance to win a processed pork hamper. The proceeds will support Darius’s medical journey.

Community members who wish to assist, can donate through the BackaBuddy link or purchase raffle tickets by contacting Naomi Steenberg directly at 079 125 3097.

Every act of generosity, no matter how small, brings hope to the Saayman family and helps ensure baby Darius receives the care he needs.

The family is appealing to the public to stand with them in this fight, and together, give their little boy the best chance at life.
