Police investigation turns ‘victim’ into suspect in alleged false rape case
When the investigating officer re-interviewed the ‘victim’, she reportedly made a contradictory statement from her initial one.
A woman from Phase 4 in Hlalanikahle is in hot water after reportedly admitting to fabricating a rape allegation against a man.
According to the police, it all started when the 21-year-old reported that on the evening of May 26, she was raped. The woman alleged that while she was walking home with her brother, they encountered a man they knew, who gave them some money. She then said she walked with her brother to a local tavern where she used her share to buy a beverage.
When she got out and couldn’t find her brother, she said she then decided to go home, only to bump into the man who had given them money. The woman alleged that the man forced her to his home in Kwa-Guqa, where he locked her inside and raped her.
“She said she was rescued by her brother and her brother’s friend,” said Lt-Col Vusi Mnisi from Vosman SAPS.

A case was opened; however, things took a different turn on June 12 when the investigating officer went to re-interview the victim.
“That is when it was discovered that the complainant contradicted herself. Her statement was not connecting so well with the previous one she made on the rape case,” Mnisi said.
“Furthermore, she admitted that she had lied about being raped by this guy.”
The officer immediately shifted gears from providing victim support to enforcing the law. The woman was arrested on the spot for perjury.
On June 15, she made her first appearance in court, where she was released on bail, and her case was postponed to July 7.
