Four arrested after spaza shop looting

Four suspects have been arrested after spaza shops were looted in Siyanqoba, while police investigate the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old man during the incident.

The suspects, three men and one woman aged between 22 and 52, were arrested today after police found them in possession of items believed to have been stolen during the looting on 8 July.

According to police, the looting took place at a spaza shop owned by a foreign national in Siyanqoba.

Police said preliminary information indicates that a group of community members were allegedly looting the shop when a sedan drove past the scene. The occupants of the vehicle allegedly opened fire indiscriminately into the crowd.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a 19-year-old man who had sustained a gunshot wound. He was declared dead at the scene.

Police have opened a murder case and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Police have appealed to anyone with information that could assist with the investigation to contact their nearest police station, call the Crime Stop hotline on 08600 10111, or submit anonymous tip-offs via the MySAPS App.
