Mayor leads service delivery assessment of bridges
As part of ongoing service delivery efforts, the rehabilitation of Mathews Phosa Street in Kwa-Guqa is currently underway.
The mayor of the Emalahleni Local Municipality (ELM), Vusi Nhlapho, accompanied by the MMC for Technical Services, Thabang Mathebula, and officials from the Technical Services Department, conducted an on-site service delivery assessment focusing on bridges, sewer-related concerns, and the cleanliness of surrounding areas.
The inspection on 15 July covered key sites including WA Botha and Lembedi Streets in Ackerville and Harare Street in Vosman.
The initiative forms part of a broader municipal programme aimed at identifying infrastructure challenges and implementing interventions to improve service delivery across the city.
During the assessment, the mayor emphasised the importance of maintaining sewer infrastructure and ensuring cleaner surroundings near bridges, which are vital for community safety and mobility. The municipality reaffirmed its commitment to addressing service delivery challenges through proactive monitoring and targeted interventions.

Speaking about the initiative, the mayor emphasised that these assessments are crucial in ensuring that the city remains responsive to community needs, stating that their goal is to identify challenges on the ground and act swiftly to implement solutions that improve the quality of life for residents.
Beyond the oversight visit, residents raised urgent concerns about a bridge that connects Tasbet Park and Duvha Park, which they say remains a serious risk area. According to community members, the bridge has long posed dangers, particularly to children who must cross it on their way to school.
“They are probably waiting for us to report that a child died there before they will fix it,” a resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said.
