Faith carries Walter through 20km charity walk despite health challenges
Carrying a wooden cross filled with the names of people who requested prayers, Walter spent the journey worshipping and praying.
Despite living with serious health conditions, Walter Bird (53), completed a remarkable 20 km charity walk driven by his faith and commitment to serving others.
Bird, who has heart disease, Parkinson’s disease and high cholesterol, undertook the walk on July 28, not to test his physical endurance but to fulfil what he believes God has placed on his heart – to pray for people across the community and raise financial support for the residents of the Immergroen Old Age Home.
For days leading up to the event, Bird shared his vision with the community. He invited residents to write their names on a large wooden cross that he carried during the walk, promising to pray for every person represented on it.
On July 28, Bird set off from the Puma Garage, carrying his cross and prayers with him.
Throughout the journey towards Middelburg, he spent time worshipping, praying, and reflecting on God’s goodness.
“I wasn’t just walking,” Bird explained.
“Every kilometre was filled with prayer. I worshipped God along the way and prayed for people who are sick, for families facing difficult times, for those struggling with addiction, for the elderly, and for everyone who asked me to remember them before God.”
While determined to complete the entire route he had planned, he knew he also had to be mindful of the health conditions he lives with every day.

“After 20 kilometres my body told me that it could not go any further. Living with heart disease means I cannot ignore those warning signs.”
He admitted feeling disappointed that he could not complete the full distance.
“I would have loved to finish everything I planned, but I also know that I cannot place my life at unnecessary risk. I could have pushed myself further, but that might have resulted in a heart attack. Sometimes faith also means having wisdom. The Lord knows my mission and He knows why I had to stop.”
Despite ending the walk earlier than planned, Bird said he does not see the event as unfinished.
“I don’t measure success by kilometres. I measure success by obedience. God gave me a mission, and I believe I fulfilled that mission. Every prayer I prayed and every person I encouraged was part of the reason I walked.”

The mission reached another important milestone on July 29 when Bird visited the Immergroen Old Age Home to hand over the financial contributions that had been collected.
“I want to thank everyone who supported this mission,” he said.
“Whether you donated money, prayed for me, encouraged me along the way or simply believed in what we were trying to do, you became part of this journey. Every contribution will help improve the lives of the residents at Immergroen.”
