Ballistic analysis on weapons seized during a sting operation in Vosman has linked seven suspects to a cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery that occurred on the Verena Road on June 2, 2025.

The suspects were arrested by the Tactical Response Team on a plot in Vosman on December 22, 2025, after police received information indicating that a group of heavily armed men were planning a robbery.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mangosuthu Nkosi said police recovered explosives and five AK-47 assault rifles during the operation.

He confirmed that ballistic analysis positively linked one of the assault rifles to the Verena Road CIT heist.

A cash-in-transit heist under investigation

According to Nkosi, the robbery occurred at approximately 18:00.

 “A G4S vehicle transporting cash to the G4S base in eMalahleni was ambushed by heavily armed suspects. The suspects allegedly opened fire on the armoured vehicle until it was forced to a stop,” he said.

Nkosi added that the occupants were ordered to get out of the vehicle before the suspects allegedly used explosives to blast open the safe. An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen, and the driver was robbed of his service pistol.

During the attack, the escort vehicle was rammed by a stolen white Volkswagen Polo, allowing the suspects to flee the scene.

New charges added to existing firearm and explosives case

Nkosi said the suspects, aged between 31 and 52, are from different provinces – two from Mpumalanga, two from the Eastern Cape, and three from Gauteng.

Their suspected involvement in the CIT robbery will now be added to the existing possession of prohibited firearms and explosives case.

The suspects are expected to appear before the eMalahleni Magistrate’s Court this coming week.

 The charges include:

• Cash-in-transit robbery
• Conspiracy to commit robbery
• Attempted murder
• Possession of prohibited firearms
• Possession of explosives.

“The investigation remains ongoing, and the possibility of additional arrests and charges cannot be ruled out,” Nkosi said.
