Women ‘reclaim’ the night
Women walk from CBD to police station demanding stronger action against perpetrators and sloppy police work.
Women dressed in black recently embarked on a walk from the Anew Hotel in the CBD to the police station to address members of the police and the judiciary.
Between the tears and heartfelt stories, one strong message shone through through: women have had enough of being victims.

Nkangala District Municipality Chief Whip Conny Nkalitshana directed a message to the police, saying women will no longer stand back while perpetrators walk the streets.
“The police must take a stronger stance against gender-based violence and femicide. We want the perpetrators arrested and behind bars.”
She emphasised that women need assistance and support from the entity that is supposed to protect them.

She added that women will no longer tolerate cases being struck off the roll due to sloppy police work.
“If the police are dragging their feet, we want to know,” Nkalitshana said.
Gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) activist Abongile Mcoki said stronger collaboration among the police, municipalities, community organisations, and health services must be prioritised.
“We need SAPS to take reports of missing women more seriously,” Mcoki said.
