Kwa-Guqa Run and Walk unites eMalahleni

The run was hosted to promote physical fitness and make a stand with GBV victims and families in saying no to violence.

The eMalahleni community recently gathered for the Kwa-Guqa Run and Walk to encourage healthy living and take a stand against gender-based violence.

According to event founder and organiser Mfanafuthi Pacule, the 10km run and walk, held in Vosman on October 10, encouraged people to exercise to stay healthy.

Pacule said speakers advised attendees on good nutrition. “Most of the time the food we eat is what kills us, because a lot of diseases come through our choice of food,” he said.

Runners stand against GBV

Beyond fitness, the event also carried a strong message against GBV.

“Nowadays mothers, sisters and daughters are being abused and killed. A lot is happening, not just in eMalahleni, but in South Africa as a whole,” said Pacule. “So by this run we were standing in support of the victims and families, and saying no to GBV.”

Among the participants was Christina Masango (70), who said she has been keeping active since her early years.

“We are so happy to have been a part of this initiative,” said Masango. “When my friend heard about it, we just registered without wasting any time because this is something we both love.”

Organiser calls for local sponsorship

Although the event is still in its early stages and struggling to secure sponsorship, Pacule expressed gratitude to those organisations that donated refreshments, and urged more people and organisations to support the initiative, which he plans to host regularly.

He also invited more community members to participate in upcoming events, noting that exercise reduces depression and stress.
