New scam targets eMalahleni motorists awaiting driver’s licences

Fraudster demands upfront cash payments to ‘clear’ non-existent parking fines before releasing driver’s licenses.

Another scam has reared its head in eMalahleni after the closure of the main licensing office.

The fraudster claims he can fast-track driver’s licences for motorists, but then demands an upfront cash payment under the pretext of clearing ‘outstanding fines’ first.

A resident who fell into the trap expressed concern after the scammer sent her a photo of the licence card she applied for in May, demanding R650 for an alleged fine she knew nothing about.

“The man said I was issued with a fine for parking in a disabled parking bay at Highveld Mall,” said the woman, who asked to remain anonymous.

“I have never parked in a disabled parking bay anywhere.”

The victim said she received a continuous string of WhatsApp messages from the scammer demanding the cash.

Highveld Mall clarifies procedures

Highveld Mall marketing manager Nicola Blake said no individual is authorised to collect money on behalf of the shopping centre.

Blake explained that the mall issues dedicated discs for disabled parking directly from the mall’s management office.

A yellow disc is a temporary disc issued to shoppers recovering from medical procedures or operations who require close access while using crutches.

A red disc is a permanent permit, which requires an official motivational letter from a medical doctor to accompany the application.

Highveld Mall’s discs issued to people with disabilities.

“Highveld Mall Security is responsible for clamping vehicles that park illegally in disabled bays. There are no third parties involved in collecting fines,” Blake said.

Traffic department warns against cash payments

The local traffic department also raised concern over the fraudulent scheme.

“No one can collect money on behalf of the traffic department,” the municipal media desk confirmed.

“Anyone who has been approached or affected is encouraged to keep all messages and proof of payment and report the matter to SAPS.”

Motorists seeking information regarding legitimate fines registered against their names can visit the traffic department situated behind the municipal building.

Alternatively, residents can monitor Facebook for announcements regarding upcoming traffic awareness campaigns, where motorists are given the opportunity to query any outstanding fines.

Witbank News requested comment from the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison spokesperson, Moeti Mmusi, but had not received a response by the time of publication.
