Witbank SPCA had its 72nd annual general meeting on July 30 at their premises.

A lot of topics were discussed between the committee members and staff expressing the difficulties and challenges experienced during the year.

Fundraising has also been challenging even though Covid 19 is no longer such a hindrance for events.

The events are also poorly supported in eMalahleni.

The society is however functioning as best they can, considering the challenges.

The society would also love to thank the public and business sector for their donations throughout the year.

The current economic climate was one of the discussions held.

Rising fuel costs has resulted in the fuel bills almost doubling, being a huge concern.

It was also noted that the intake of cats and dogs was 2 119.

This excludes other animals such as goats and horses.

The general maintenance of the kennels was discussed.

Many kennels are in dire need of repair.

“It is abundantly clear the crunch is still to come and we fear the sheer numbers of animals being surrendered as families struggle to cope with rising costs, it will all be too much to cope with expecting a high increase in numbers,” said committee member Liz Oberholzer.

The committee are showing interest in implementing a fundraising team.

No new members have come forward to join the management committee.

The search for new members is ongoing.
