Stay away from Olifants River – police warn

The community of eMalahleni is advised to exercise caution, avoid isolated riverbanks, and report any suspicious individuals or activities immediately.

Witbank SAPS warns the public against visiting the Olifants River, as this year has seen a surge in armed robbery cases involving the river.

Since January, eight armed robberies have been reported along the riverbanks.

The victims are predominantly religious believers who frequent the area for rituals, with criminals targeting and robbing them of their vehicles and all personal belongings.

Drowning risk highlighted
Acting Station Commander of Witbank SAPS, Colonel Emmarancia Kgosana, warned the public about both the criminal and environmental dangers present around the river.

“We are deeply concerned about the persistent armed robberies taking place along the Panorama River. Criminals are lurking in the area and preying on unsuspecting victims. We are intensifying patrols and investigations, but we also urge the community to avoid this area when possible and remain vigilant,” said Kgosana.

She also stressed the inherent danger posed by environmental factors, especially during the rainy season.

”Apart from the risk of being robbed, community members must understand the severe danger of drowning. Rains normally lead to rises in river levels and strong currents. People performing rituals or crossing near the river are placing their lives at extreme risk,” she added.

Tell the police if you have any information
Witbank SAPS appeals to the public to exercise caution, avoid isolated riverbanks, and report any suspicious individuals or activities immediately, as community cooperation remains crucial in preventing further incidents.

Anyone with information that may assist police in solving the cases is urged to contact Witbank SAPS on 013 655 5052 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
