Municipality secures land to expand cemetery access for communities

Families in the City of Coal will soon have easier access to cemetery services.

Residents of eMalahleni can expect improved access to burial services following a decisive move by the municipality to address the growing demand for cemetery space.

The mayor, Clr Vusi Nhlapho, the municipal manager Sizwe Mayisela, ward councillors, and senior municipal officials conducted an oversight visit focused on cemetery developments across the municipality.

The programme forms part of ongoing efforts to ensure dignified and accessible burial services for all residents.

During the visit on April 8, it was confirmed that the Komdraai Cemetery has reached full capacity, leading to the use of the Klarinet Cemetery as an alternative.

However, this arrangement has presented challenges for many residents due to the long travel distance.

Mayor Nhlapho acknowledged these concerns and said, “We wanted to update the community about the new developments regarding cemetery space. We are aware that the Komdraai cemetery is now full, and residents have had to use Klarinet, which is far for many.”

He further highlighted the municipality’s response to community concerns: “We heard the community’s concerns about the distance, and we engaged our private partner, Thungela, to assist by donating land so that we can continue providing cemetery services closer to the community.”

The newly secured land, which is near the previous Komdraai cemeteries, will undergo the necessary technical and environmental assessments to determine its suitability for burial purposes.

This process is essential to ensure compliance with health, environmental, and planning regulations. Mayor Nhlapho reassured residents that transparency will remain a priority as the project progresses.

“We will continue to keep the community informed as we move forward. The next step is to assess the land and begin the required processes to ensure it is suitable for burials.”
