Cause still unclear after more than 25 Kwa-Guqa Primary Schools learners hospitalised

Parents of Kwa-Guqa Primary School learners are growing increasingly frustrated as the investigation into the food-related illness drags on with no clear answers.

More than three weeks after over 25 learners from Kwa-Guqa Primary School were hospitalised with a suspected food-related illness, the exact cause of the incident remains unclear.

The learners first fell ill on March 20 after complaining of stomach cramps, vomiting, and general discomfort during school hours.

At least 21 learners were initially rushed to the hospital, while others were later taken in by their parents, bringing the total number of affected children to nearly 30.

All were treated and discharged on the same day.

The learners had eaten rice, fish, and butternut squash during their break.

While the meal was initially suspected, there is still no confirmed link between the food and the illnesses.

Officials met with parents on April 12 to provide feedback on the investigation.

“They shared the results available from their side, indicating that the school food was not identified as the cause of the illness. However, outstanding hospital results are still awaited, and other possible factors have not been ruled out,” said a parent who attended the meeting.

Parents said they are now waiting for the hospital results, hoping these will finally provide clear answers about what caused the incident.

• An enquiry has been sent to the education department for comment, but no response was received at the time of publication.
