Marvel & Shine Boxing Club helps young people find hope through boxing
The Hlalanikahle-based boxing club is using sport to teach young people discipline, confidence and life skills while creating opportunities for local talent.
Marvel & Shine Boxing Club is using boxing to change lives by teaching young people discipline, confidence and the importance of hard work.
Since its establishment in 2018, the club has become a place where aspiring boxers from age seven to 35 can train, learn discipline and develop their confidence.
The club currently has about 15 boxers who are working towards improving their skills inside and outside the ring.
The driving force behind the club is founder Vusi Masango, a former amateur boxer who understands the value of sport and the lessons it can teach.
“After my boxing career ended, I always wanted to find a way to give back to my community. Boxing gave me discipline and direction, and I wanted to give young people the same opportunity,” he said.
The club trains from an old library in Hlalanikahle, a building that was previously vandalised. With assistance from the ward councillor, the facility was made available for the club to use as a training space.
The boxing club’s commitment to developing local talent will be showcased at the Marvel & Shine Nkangala Boxing Tournament at the Rondo Complex, Kwa-Guga Ext 5, on August 8.
The event will begin with weigh-ins at 08:00, followed by boxing bouts from 12:00. Entry is free, and community members are encouraged to attend and support the athletes.
Masango added, “A boxer needs more than training. They need opportunities to compete, learn from others and build confidence. This tournament gives them a chance to show what they can do.”
