Modise takes charges as new Mpumalanga SAPS commissioner
Mpumalanga has welcomed Lieutenant General Nkakoane Aphania Modise as its new SAPS commissioner, with officials saying her extensive policing experience will strengthen efforts to improve safety and combat crime.
Mpumalanga has a new SAPS commissioner, with Lieutenant General Nkakoane Aphania Modise officially taking over the leadership of policing in the province.
Modise was unveiled by acting national commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane at Bethal Police Station on July 31.
The announcement was attended by Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu and MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Jackie Macie, who welcomed the appointment and pledged the province’s support.
Decades of policing experience
Modise joins Mpumalanga with more than 35 years of policing experience, having joined SAPS in 1989 and served in various leadership positions.
Her career includes serving as station commander at Senekal and Odendaalsrus before being promoted to Brigadier in 2012, where she was responsible for the Moqhaka Cluster in the Free State.
In 2016, she was promoted to Major General and led the Thabong and Welkom clusters before becoming deputy provincial commissioner for crime detection in the Free State in 2020.
Macie said the province would benefit from Modise’s experience in crime detection, operations and policing.

Key crime priorities ahead
He said her appointment comes at a critical time as Mpumalanga continues to deal with challenges, including gun violence in the Calcutta policing precinct, illegal mining and organised crime.
The MEC said the department looks forward to working with the new commissioner to strengthen community policing, improve response times and ensure the implementation of the SAPS police reset agenda.
Macie also thanked outgoing provincial commissioner Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, who retires from the service effective August 1.
He credited Mkhwanazi with maintaining stability within the provincial SAPS structure, improving staff morale and contributing to progress in the fight against crime.
