Witbank police have urged pedestrians to stay alert after two men targeted unsuspecting victims in separate cellphone robberies on Saturday.

In the first incident along Mandela Street, a pedestrian was walking alone when two men approached him and asked for the time.

While he was responding, one of the men allegedly moved behind him and grabbed him before the men fled with his cellphone.

Job offer distraction

In the Central Business District, another pedestrian was robbed after two men asked whether he was looking for work. After he said he was not looking for work, the men searched him and allegedly took his cellphone.

Stay vigilant

Witbank Police Station spokesperson Warrant Officer David Ratau said the cases were under investigation.

“Police are urging members of the community to remain vigilant, particularly when walking alone or when approached by strangers. Residents are encouraged to avoid displaying valuable items such as cellphones in public, remain aware of their surroundings and, where possible, walk with others,” said Ratau.
